Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for you to join a busy Orthopaedic Physiotherapy team based on the inpatient wards at St. Mary's Hospital on the Isle of Wight. We are looking for someone to join an experienced group of assistant staff and work alongside our qualified Physiotherapists.

The successful candidate will have the scope to work as a band 4 assistant, as well as with other Physiotherapy staff and the wider Multidisciplinary Team. You will manage a caseload of clinical and administrative tasks and will support the Orthopaedic weekend rota, working approximately one Saturday a month.

As part of your role, you will be assessing and progressing patients' mobility after orthopaedic surgery or following any surgical intervention.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

On a daily basis you will be assigned a caseload of patients and tasks. This will include helping people get moving after surgery or illness. It will involve physical handling and moving of people so requires a level of physical fitness. Your role will involve using numerous pieces of moving and handling equipment, identifying safe ways for people to move. You will be following delegated tasks from qualified therapy staff, as well as following protocol led therapy plans post surgery.

The role involves the daily use of several IT systems so competence with computing tasks is essential. You will be completing referrals, ordering and maintaining equipment and communicating on a daily basis with other health staff, carers and family.

You will be providing support for band 3 Physiotherapy staff, as well as students and apprentices as required

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential

A-Level qualifications or equivalent (e.g. NVQ 3); Health & Social Care NVQ level III or above experience

Care certificate completion within the first 6-12 months of employment if new to the Trust

English and Maths GCE/GCSE or equivalent Grade C or above or equivalent qualification to demonstrate numeracy and literacy

Have evidence of a general understanding of the conditions likely to be managed within the Physiotherapy specialism being supported

Computer literate with demonstrated ability to autonomously, effectively and efficiently use Microsoft office suite and intranet/internet

Demonstrated ability to utilise data bases autonomously

An understanding of Rehabilitation and human anatomy and physiology.

An understanding of safeguarding and data protection policies.

Desirable

CPD relevant to the profession

Exercise Class knowledge

Confident leading educational /exercise classes

Completion or commencement of The Care Certificate.

Capable of inducting new B3 Assistants

Assist registered staff in student placements

Have a clear understanding/ knowledge of the team processes underpinning the Physiotherapy Specialism

Experience

Essential

Evidence of experience working within physiotherapy field (such as work experience/observation sessions) or working within related therapy fields e.g. occupational therapy, sports therapy, holistic therapies, nursing

Evidence of working with the public, especially within the healthcare field.

Desirable

Experience of mentoring work experience students

Broad experience of care provision and evidence of in-house training at band 3 level within the NHS

Supervise B3 and below

Additional Criteria

Essential

Physically fit and able to comply with Trust manual handling guidelines

Ability to keep legible and accurate notes in English
